The Birthday Project

The Birthday Project is undertaken each year in honor and celebration of Blair Michaela Shanahan Lane, January 24, 2000 – July 4, 2011. Blair was passionate about affecting the world around her and we celebrate her legacy by giving back to the community and inviting others to do the same.

Each year, Blair’s Foster Socks spearheads a new project to benefit people in distressed situations in Kansas City and beyond.

Take a look at some of the past Birthday Projects we’ve participated in, and check back to see what this year’s project will be.

2018: Birthday Bag Project

Oh the Places she would have gone. We are collecting NEW BAGS... all SHAPES and all SIZES. At this age most kids have big plans to GO...to college, to travel the world or just get a place of their own. There are some that don’t get a choice and have to go. It is important to have something to carry their belongings in, these bags will be donated to partners in the community that have established relationships with teens becoming adults.

2017: we celebrated Blair's 17th Birthday by sharing...

We shared that The Blair Michaela Shanahan Lane Memorial Scholarship is with the Truman Heartland Community Foundation. This scholarship will be awarded in 2018 the year Blair would have graduated from high school.

2016: Celebrate Blair's Sweet Sixteen Birthday Kits

We collected cake mixes, frosting, and candles, to honor Blair's sweet 16,

We exceeded our goal 3200 kits by donating the following new items: Cake mixes, Frosting, Birthday Candles

2015: KITS of HOPE

Thousands of people in Kansas City are homeless — children and families among them. In 2015 to celebrate Blair’s 15th birthday, we collected necessities to create winter kits to help the homeless cope with freezing temperatures. The kits not only provided people with essentials we may take for granted, like toothpaste and Chapstick — they also provided hope and dignity.

2014: Toilet Paper Drive

For Blair’s 14th birthday, we hosted a “Spare a Square” toilet paper drive to benefit Giving the Basics, a Kansas City charity that provides families in distressed situations with household necessities not covered by government assistance. We far exceeded our goal of 1400 rolls of toilet paper, collecting 2500 total to donate!

2013: Share Your Hair

To honor and Celebrate Blair's 13th Birthday Michele (Blair's Mom) along with (12th others) more than 150 other women and young girls cut 10inches or more of hair and donated it Locks of Love at Salon Allure in LSMO.
