The Birthday Project
The Birthday Project is undertaken each year in honor and celebration of Blair Michaela Shanahan Lane, January 24, 2000 – July 4, 2011. Blair was passionate about affecting the world around herand we celebrate her legacy by giving back to the community and inviting others to do the same.
Each year, Blair’s Foster Socks spearheads a new project to benefit people in distressed situations in Kansas City and beyond.
Take a look at some of the past Birthday Projects we’ve participated in, and check back to see what this year’s project will be.
Thousands of people in Kansas City are homeless — children and families among them. In 2015 to celebrate Blair’s 15th birthday, we collected necessities to create winter kits to help the homeless cope with freezing temperatures. The kits not only provided people with essentials we may take for granted, like toothpaste and chapstick — they also provided hope and dignity.
2014: Toilet Paper Drive
For Blair’s 14th birthday, we hosted a “Spare a Square” toilet paper drive to benefit Giving the Basics, a Kansas City charity that provides families in distressed situations with household necessities not covered by government assistance. We far exceeded our goal of 1400 rolls of toilet paper, collecting 2500 total to donate!
